About this course

A) THEORY & DRY LAB COURSE (Part 1): (1)- One Day Fast Track Phlebotomy Training Course. This includes Theory and Dry Lab experience on mannequins for those with healthcare experience. (2)- Two Days Beginners Phlebotomy Training Course. The beginners training also consist of two parts - Theory + Dry Lab Experience. The teaching covers more ground so that you can achieve a firm understanding of the basics of Phlebotomy. Candidates go through in detail the legal aspects of Phlebotomy, Infection control, Health and Safety, practical tips and all the theory parts of Phlebotomy. You will also practice on a mannequin. On completion this leads to receiving a Certificate of Attendance. After completion of either the One Day or Two Days course, you will then need to be booked into the Live Blood Training which will lead to a Certificate of Competence. B) LIVE BLOOD TRAINING (Part 2): -Live Blood Sessions. This is the practical part of the training and it takes place at the NHS Phlebotomy Clinic or at an NHS Trust. Candidates take blood from the real patients under the supervision of a trainer and receive an NHS Certificate of Competence at the completion of this part of the training.

The role and scope of the phlebotomist, clinical team working and professional standards.

Anatomy of the Venous and Circulatory System
Blood composition and function, vein anatomy, identifying suitable venepuncture sites and anatomical variations.

Pre-Procedure Assessment and Patient Communication
Consent, patient identification, contraindications, allergy checks and patient-centred communication.

Venepuncture Technique — Theory
Equipment selection, tube order of draw, tourniquet application and site preparation.

Venepuncture Technique — Practical Competency
Step-by-step practical training in venepuncture execution, including difficult veins and failed attempts.

Infection Prevention and Control
Standard precautions, PPE selection and use, hand hygiene and decontamination procedures.

Managing Adverse Reactions and Complications
Recognition of fainting, haematoma, nerve injury and needlestick injuries — immediate response and reporting.

Sharps Safety and Waste Management
Safe sharps handling, disposal and post-exposure prophylaxis procedures.

Specimen Handling and Laboratory Processes
Correct labelling, rejection criteria, cold chain requirements and transportation.

Duty of candour, incident reporting, record keeping and professional standards in phlebotomy.

Practical Placement and Competency Sign-Off
Supervised clinical hours in a real healthcare setting — demonstrating competency across a minimum number of successful venepunctures.
